Taipei Fashion Week opened its Spring/Summer 2023 season on October 14th with "CrossLab: Dialogue between Indigenous Art and Fashion," a themed group show highlighting the collaboration between 5 designers with 5 expert traditional craftsmen.

The show explores the intersection of fashion, craft and humanity through 50 pieces, emphasizing the importance of preserving and passing along cultural traditions and design techniques from various indigenous groups while building community and fashion with a new perspective. Modern civilization is the crystallization of historical accumulation, which is the mission of Taipei Fashion Week.

"The opening show focuses on exploring the innovative possibilities of the treasured crafts of the Taiwanese indigenous communities, and transforming the national treasure craft into new inspiration for fashion design. I hope that through the translation of these contemporary fashion designers, classic weaving crafts can enter our daily wardrobe," said Minister of Culture, Lee Yung-Te.

Taipei Fashion Week continues to chart a progressive outlook on the future of fashion, this season looking to its roots and reinterpreting traditional techniques for modern designs as a form of cultural sustainability. Designers Bob Jian, McFly Chao, Chia-Hung Su, Justin Chou and Shao-Yen Chen worked to convey a narrative where modern protagonists discover their self-identity through traditional costume craftsmanship as a way to move forward.

Indigenous masters—also known as preservers of the disappearing skills that have unique significance for each ethnic group—were essential to the development of each collection. Such skills include specialty weaving techniques from the people of Kavalan, Paiwan, Seediq and Atayal. The resulting fashion is striking, a balance of tradition and innovation, proving indigenous techniques have a place in modern fashion.

Highlights included DYCTEAM's collaboration with Seta Bakan, one of the most respected weavers among the modern Seediq people, who helped inject a handcrafted element into the brand's urban clothing style. Similarly, SHAO YEN worked with zaqong to include exclusive banana silk weaving of the Kavalan people into his designs. Among the 16 indigenous communities in Taiwan, only the Kavalan people have this special skill, which was typically reserved for nobles. Meanwhile, JUST IN XX imagined street wear for the future with the help of Ljavaus, the most representative preserver of the traditional craft of Paiwan Kinavatjesan traditional embroidery. Ljavaus sorted eight traditional pattern techniques that not only contain valuable wisdom from tribal elders to teach their younger generations, but also symbols and totems that depict tribal memory and legends.

The entire show was an immersive experience, featuring VR visual sets, models from the community, and sound and music produced by indigenous musician, Abao—all highlighting the core crossover and connection of craft and modern fashion, old and new, humanity and commerce.Read more at:formal dresses | formal dresses brisbane

Luxury brand Balenciaga has signed a strategic deal with Reliance Brands Limited (RBL), which will see the couture label enter the Indian market.

The long-term franchise agreement will make RBL Balenciaga’s exclusive partner in the region and marks the branding agency’s second deal with a Kering-owned label.

It previously struck a similar agreement with Bottega Veneta.

Founded initially in 1917, Balenciaga has gained significant traction in the luxury industry since its appointment of Demna Gvasalia as artistic director in 2015.

During his time at the brand, Gvasalia has driven notable brand collaborations and staged a number of fashion week spectacles that have continued to cement the brand’s reputation.

“Few brands have actually embraced the opportunity for creative reinterpretation and reinvention quite like Balenciaga,” said Darshan Mehta, MD of Reliance Brands Limited, in a release.

Mehta continued: “Their avant-garde and ingenious creations, bold use of the logo and a consequent cult in the fashion industry has already created a strong footing throughout the world.”

RBL said that the brand’s interactions with the digital realm and social responsibilities has kept it at the forefront.

Boot Barn creative director Isha Nicole is hoping the 45-year-old franchise that caters to cowboys and ranchers can leapfrog on the Western fashion trend and bring the lifestyle fully into the mainstream.

A veteran SoCal stylist, Nicole was a later-in-life convert to the country-Western scene and noted how cowboy boots, fringe, wide-brimmed hats and lots of leather influenced tastemakers outside the scene. “I saw this really cool fusion of brands, artists, stylists and public figures that were embracing Western fashion within their own worlds,” she said.

A stint at Tennessee’s Dan Post Boot Company helped Nicole understand the boot supply chain, which largely relies on world-class artisans in Leon, Mexico. She developed an appreciation not just for the cowboy boot’s unique aesthetic, but the craftsmanship that goes into creating its rugged toughness. “You establish this association with a product and how it encapsulates the American spirit, and it kind of became an addiction, and a segue for me,” she said. “I just fully dove in after that.”

Joining Boot Barn in 2016, Nicole was immediately tasked with implementing a rebrand that would reinvigorate the existing customer base while helping the chain reach a broader audience. “Within the mainstream market, there was so much momentum already,” she said, pointing to the “YeeHaw Agenda,” an embracing of country style fueled by Black artists like Beyonce and Lil Nas X, of “Old Town Road” fame. Television hits such as Kevin Costner-led “Yellowstone” have also played a role in bringing the West’s aesthetic to the fore.

But developing a roadmap for the future has meant abandoning elements of the past—namely, an uncomfortable and glaring lack of diversity and representation throughout the Western space. Through a campaign dubbed “Burning Bridges” that launched in July, Nicole sought to reframe Boot Barn’s mission through a new lens. The fashion showcase featured new looks from its womenswear vertical, Wonderwest, which Nicole established as a home for more trend-forward styling, on models who represent a true cross-section of the country’s towns and cities. Dusty roads, red rock canyons, and wind-swept fields featured in a campaign that focused on prairie dresses, piped button-downs and embroidered vests and jackets layered with belts, bolo ties, holsters and hats, along with boots in tones ranging from earthy sepia to Barbie pink.

When Nicole first started working in the Western space, she focused on catering to the retailer’s core customer, who mostly was looking for workwear and versatile styles. But after solidifying the messaging around those product lines, Nicole was intent on revamping the brand’s approach to women’s fashion. “I had the flexibility to think about a customer who isn’t necessarily a cowgirl—maybe she’s really just a mainstream contemporary fashion customer that loves Western-inspired pieces,” she said.

It’s a consumer profile that represents something new for Boot Barn, she said. “It’s been really fun to bring to bring her to life because she is fantastical and whimsical”—a total departure from the retailer’s roots. The “fierce, working cowgirl” does not want to see her uniform worn as a costume, said Nicole, who sees room to incorporate references that champion Western styling and motifs. “Nothing about these product choices are practical—this is fun, it’s fashion, it’s fantasy,” she added. “I’m not suggesting that she wear a fringe mini skirt and thigh-high cowboy boots to feed the cows—that’s not reality.”

While Nicole said Wonderwest was met with skepticism, “more and more people within the Western world are embracing Western fashion” in recent seasons—and the proof is in the numbers. Boot Barn president and CEO Jim Conroy in May called fiscal 2022 “one of the best, if not the best, years I’ve seen in my entire retail career,” as the retailer reported a record $1.5 billion in sales, breaking the billion-dollar mark for the first time. Each of the 52 weeks of fiscal 2022 saw sales growth greater than 55 percent on a two-year basis, he said, with women’s apparel, boots, hats and accessories outperforming all other categories.

“We’ve extended our reach to more customers. We’ve broadened our assortment. We’ve contemporized the brand to make it more accessible to people that are outside our core Western customer,” he said. The largely brick-and-mortar business has even announced plans to triple its footprint over the next decade, expanding from 300 stores to 900.

Nicole wants to leverage Wonderwest’s success to go bigger. The Burning Bridges campaign teases the fall Wonderwest collection, which offers leather trench coats, beaded cocktail dresses, denim dresses, fringed shirt-jackets, suede flares, pearl-adorned cowboy boots and embroidered peasant dresses.

Asked why Western styling is on the rise, Nicole pointed to basic American values. “Everyone can connect to the themes of grit, perseverance, tenacity, community and connection,” she said. “And if some stitching on a boot sparks some interest for someone living on the coast of California to look into Western culture—if that’s the hook that creates some curiosity—that’s phenomenal.”Read more at:robe de soirée pas cher | formal evening dresses

I RECENTLY attended the annual Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby and of course the best dressed competition which has made a return after three years due to the pandemic.

It was great to see my friend Bairbre Power there who is a fashion expert as well as Breeda McLoughlin, my dear friend from Dubai and wife of Colm McLoughlin who have been hosting the incredible Dubai Duty Free for years.

Limerick's wonderful Greg O'Shea was looking as dapper as ever alongside beautiful broadcaster Doireann Garrihy who both judged the Most Stylish Man and Woman.

Of course the highlight of the day for me was that the wonderful Clare woman Olive Foley walked away with the title of 'The most Stylish Lady' and the holiday of a lifetime to Dubai along with one thousand euros spending money.

She was there with her great friend Joanne Skelly who designed her award winning hat. Olive’s beautiful dress was by London-based New Zealand designer Emilia Wickstead.

She was overwhelmed and pleasantly surprised with the win. She's taking off to Dubai with her fabulous friend Joanne, a huge congratulations Olive.

Most Stylish Man chosen by our own Greg O'Shea went to a well deserved former heavyweight boxing champion Harry Cowap who looked as cool as a breeze in his light blue handmade suit. He won a five-star K club VIP experience.

Known as the “Wonder Woman of Vogue,” Leiomy Maldonado boasts an impressive resume of collaborations with the likes of Willow Smith and Icona Pop. You may have also spotted her as one of the judges on the HBO Max show “Legendary,” a dance competition inspired by the world of ballroom. Ten houses compete against each other in weekly vogue battles, with a different theme guiding each episode.

For the 35-year-old Bronx-born dancer, the experience of being on the show has been fun, but also deeply fulfilling. She’s long wished for an opportunity for ballroom culture to “be celebrated and showcased on a stage of that magnitude.”

“For it to be something I am a part of, that’s so major to me,” Maldonado tells POPSUGAR. “I’ve been hearing from so many different people [about] how they’ve learned to accept their siblings, or they’ve learned to accept their kids, and learned to accept or understand the LGBT community a little bit more. To me, that’s successful.”

Maldonado first encountered voguing at a Boys and Girls Club in her native Bronx, through someone who ended up becoming her first trans mentor. She was captivated by the art form and eager to learn more. A few days later, when they met up again, she handed over a VHS tape.

“I went home and I popped that in the VCR,” Maldonado recalls. “I automatically got pulled into the wonderland that ballroom basically is. After that, I started going to after-school LGBTQ+ programs. And I met other voguers there. And from there, I was introduced to my first house.”

In 2003, she walked her first ball and “got chopped,” as she puts it, though the experience only fueled her passion for voguing even more. “I was so eager to just get out there and showcase what I learned on my own, and once I got chopped, for me, it was like an ‘oh, well’ kind of thing,” she says. “I didn’t expect to do good anyway, but it didn’t deter me from wanting to compete more and getting back out there.”

Maldonado seems to have a penchant for leaping into the unknown. She recently joined a group of LGBTQ+ community leaders, including Law Roach and Tess Holliday, in a panel discussion for the Metaverse Culture Series “Dream House.” They discussed identity, chosen family, safety and culture in the metaverse.

Below, POPSUGAR joins Maldonado in the metaverse to chat about dressing avatars, packing for summer adventures, and all the life lessons voguing has taught her.

Leiomy Maldonado: It’s actually not my first time. But every time I come here, I learn something new. I’ve loved the experience so far. I loved being able to create my avatar. It’s also fun to interact with people and to see how much emotion these facial expressions can give us.

PS: I’m still taking it all in. Did you have anything special planned for Pride this year?

LM: Usually, I’m not huge on events on Pride because it’s too much going on, lots of people. When I was younger, I would always go out to the New York City parade and enjoy my nights. But I like to just be more calm, maybe with friends. We will get together and just spend time together, talk about memories: how we met and how our journeys have been together. I feel like that’s very important because we get caught up sometimes with time going by so fast that we forget what we’ve been through. So I enjoy that.

PS: We’re also in the middle of summer. What are your packing essentials for this time of year?

LM: I’m huge on skincare. So, of course, I gotta have my hyaluronic serums with me all the time. SPF cream. Everyone needs SPF cream. Moisturizer, period. A good cleanser. Two or three pairs of sweatpants because I like to be comfortable. Two pairs of jeans because we all like to throw on a pair of jeans, of course. When it comes to footwear, I like neutral sneakers – things I can switch around and just wear. I can dress it up or down.

PS: Which loungewear brands are you shopping for right now?

LM: I use a lot of Nike gear because it’s comfortable. I can use it for dancing or just lounging around. When it comes to sweatpants, I love Fear of God. Their sweatpants fit so, so comfortably. I love that their drawstrings are so long.

PS: Jewelry is something else I wanted to ask you about. Because I see on your avatar, you have these gorgeous hoops.

LM: I love hoops. Hoops are a go-to for me, especially now that I cut my hair. I like to do hoop earrings, but I also like a stud. I love a nice little diamond stud where it’s simple, but poppy. I do have a septum piercing that I recently got last year and I love it.

PS: What would you consider to be some of the greatest lessons that voguing has taught you?

LM: Voguing has honestly taught me how to express myself in ways I didn’t know [how], especially transitioning at a young age. I didn’t know how to express myself and how to deal with so much emotion and all the changes I was going through. And through voguing, I was able to do that. Voguing has been basically like therapy to me. It has helped me through so much. And being a part of the ballroom itself has been a journey where it wasn’t easy. But without those things, and without going through a lot of the stuff I went through, I wouldn’t be who I am today, having the wisdom and the experiences that I’ve been able to have.

PS: How would you characterize the state of trans representation in fashion right now?

LM: I love [that] they have been able to portray trans lives [in a diverse way]. Nowadays, everyone is being celebrated. There are trans writers. There are trans models. There are trans dancers. There are trans reporters and people running for office. It’s amazing to see that the fashion world has been allowing trans people to represent themselves how they want to be seen. Even outside of just the transness, we’ve been able to see people exploring sexuality as well within the trans community, like trans lesbians or gay trans men.
